Process Control: Improving the Productivity of Your Small Factory

Several years ago, I purchased a small clothing factory. My goal was to focus on producing quality goods that were affordable for people on fixed incomes. It didn't take me long to see that we needed to improve the production process. To get started, I brought in a production and efficiency expert. She looked at our current production layout and identified several ways to eliminate waste and shorten the amount of time needed to cut and assemble a garment. With some rearranging of machinery and job responsibilities, we were able to increase our productivity by 30% and reduce operational costs by the same amount. Whether your company produces clothing, widgets, or toys, it pays to take a second look at the process. Let me share what the expert did to help us. You may find some of those same suggestions will work for your operation.

Candy may not always be on your customers' grocery lists, but there are several ways you can drive impulse sales by marketing candy throughout your store. Think beyond candy placed in checkout aisles and use the following ideas to help boost candy sales in your store.

Cardboard Candy Displays

Some shoppers may choose to avoid candy aisles simply because they don't think they need to purchase any. Merchandising candy in colorful display boxes throughout the store can help customers notice new candies on the market or simply grab a few treats before heading to the checkout aisle. Consider having custom displays created for various holidays throughout the year so you can merchandise groupings of candies together. For example, a Mother's Day display filled with individual candy bars, boxes of chocolates, and bags of gourmet candy can drive sales, and adding greeting cards or gift bags to the display can even lead to complete gift sales.

Baked Goods Demos

Candy can be used for more than just snacking. Consider working with your bakery department to host a decorating demonstration for cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. Use candies you sell in the store to make these goodies look great, and place your cardboard displays on either side of the demonstration table. Customers can then grab the items you've used in the demonstrations to try at home. Consider adding cake mixes and other baking essentials to the cardboard displays to drive more sales.

Candy Sample Table

If you have just started selling a new type of candy, consider setting up a sample table to introduce customers to the product. Have a staff member slice candy bars into bite-sized pieces, or fill small condiment cups with smaller types of candy for customers to sample. As with the baked goods demonstrations, be sure to place your cardboard candy boxes next to the table so customers can grab a few packages after sampling. You may even want to contact the manufacturer of the candy to see if there are any promotional items you can give away as part of the sample event. You may be able to get coupons directly from the manufacturer to entice people to make more purchases.

Having a collection of cardboard candy displays in your stock room provides you with the freedom to set up promotions throughout the year, so be sure to order several designs to help boost sales. You may even want to order more than one of each so you can create displays in different areas of your store.
